Armando Christian Pérez (born January 14, 1981),[1] better known by his stage name Pitbull, is an American rapper. His first recorded performance was from the Lil Jon album Kings of Crunk in 2002, after which he released his debut album in 2004 titled M.I.A.M.I. (short for Money Is a Major Issue) under TVT Records. Since then, he has released two other albums under the label, El Mariel in 2006 and The Boatlift in 2007.[1] He is also the host of his own Spanish-language program on the cable channel Mun2 titled La Esquina (Spanish for The Corner).[2]

Early life and career beginnings

Pérez was born to first-generation Cuban immigrant parents who made him recite the works of poet José Martí. He is of Spanish descent and encountered problems early in his career as a rapper because he was white, blue-eyed and Cuban American.[3] He was also influenced by the Miami bass genre of hip hop music[1] and has cited Celia Cruz and Willy Chirino as sources of inspiration for his music[4]. Pitbull's parents separated when he was young and he was raised by his mother. He later spent time with a foster family in Roswell, Georgia.[5] He began rapping in high school and was inspired by Nas, The Notorious B.I.G. and Big Pun.[6] At age 16, his mother kicked him out of their house after he became a drug dealer. He then graduated Coral Park High School and focused his career in rapping.[5] After meeting Irv Gotti,[1] Pitbull met Luther Campbell of 2 Live Crew, who encouraged him to rap battle on radio.[6] He expressed interest in the West coast and East coast genres later in life.[1]

Pitbull explained the reason behind choosing his stage name, saying that the dog "bite[s] to lock. The dog is too stupid to lose. And they're outlawed in Dade County. They're basically everything that I am. It's been a constant fight."[5] After meeting Lil Jon in Miami,[5] Pitbull was featured on Lil Jon and the East Side Boyz' album Kings of Crunk in 2002.[1] Pitbull's song "Oye" was featured on the soundtrack to the film 2 Fast 2 Furious the following year.[5] In addition, Pitbull also released several mixtapes, composed of freestyles and remixes of popular rap music. Campbell featured Pitbull in his single "Lollipop".[1]

2004–2005: M.I.A.M.I.

In 2004, Pitbull released his debut album M.I.A.M.I., with the lead single being "Culo" ("butt" in English; can be used as "ass" in context) produced by Lil Jon and the Diaz Brothers. It peaked at #32 on the Billboard Hot 100 chart and #11 on the Hot Rap Tracks chart. Other singles included "Dammit Man", "Back Up", "Toma", and "That's Nasty" (both featuring Lil Jon). He joined the Anger Management Tour, the 2005 hip-hop concert tour headlined by Eminem and 50 Cent.[7] Pitbull also appeared on the Ying Yang Twins' single "Shake", which peaked at #41 on the Hot 100 and #12 on the rap chart, and Twista's "Hit the Floor" (#94 Hot 100, #20 Rap). Remix album Money Is Still a Major Issue was released in November 2005; it included new track "Everybody Get Up", a duet with hip-hop/R&B group Pretty Ricky.

TVT Records, Pitbull's label at the time, and Slip-N-Slide Records disputed over the release of Welcome to the 305, an unreleased album that Pitbull recorded with Slip-N-Slide in 2001.[8] A judge in Miami made a decision allowing Slip-N-Slide to release the album,[9] and a U.S. District Court judge affirmed the decision further.[10] In March 2007, TVT was ordered to pay Slip-N-Slide $9.1 million for blocking the album release.[11]

2006–2008: El Mariel and The Boatlift

In January 2006, he guest-starred in UPN's South Beach. Also in 2006, he recorded "Nuestro Himno" in collaboration with Wyclef Jean, Carlos Ponce, and Olga Tañón.[12] On Listennn... the Album, the debut album by Terror Squad member and Miami radio personality DJ Khaled, Pitbull performed on three singles: "Holla At Me" and "Born-n-Raised" alongside other Southern based rappers.

El Mariel, Pitbull's second album, was released in October 2006. The title was in reference to the boat that transported Cuban refugees to Florida in the movie Scarface. He dedicated the album to his father, who died that year in May.[3] Along with the usual party-oriented tracks, Pitbull also included politically-themed tracks in El Mariel.[13] The album was released on October 31, 2006, and included singles "Bojangles", "Ay Chico (Lengua Afuera)", "Fuego", and duet with Puerto Rican singer Ken-Y, "Dime (Remix)". El Mariel topped the Billboard independent albums chart[14] and peaked at #17 on the Billboard 200 and #2 on the rap chart.

Pitbull's third album, titled The Boatlift, was released in November 2007, spawned by the single "Secret Admirer" featuring Lloyd on the chorus. Earlier, Pitbull announced that this album would have a more gangsta rap edge than his earlier albums.[15] Subsequent singles included "Go Girl" featuring Trina, and "The Anthem" featuring and produced Lil Jon, that song sampling the hook from the song "El Africano" by Wilfrido Vargas and the beat from the song "Calabria" by Rune RK. "Go Girl" peaked at #80 on the Billboard Hot 100 and #36 on the Hot Rap Tracks chart; "The Anthem" #36 on the Hot 100 and #11 on the Hot Rap Tracks.

His variety show, Pitbull's La Esquina, debuted May 2007 on the mun2 cable network.[16] On December 21, 2007, Pitbull was arrested for drunk driving; he posted $1,000 on bail and pleaded not guilty.[17] He was later acquitted from the charge.[18] Pitbull also appeared on DJ Laz' "Move Shake Drop" and DJ Felli Fel's "Feel It".

2009–present: Rebelution and Armando

For his latest album Rebelution, Pitbull released "I Know You Want Me (Calle Ocho)" through Ultra Records after his former label TVT Records went out of business. "Krazy" peaked at #30 on the Hot 100 and #11 on the Hot Rap Tracks charts. "I Know You Want Me" peaked at #2 on the Hot 100 and peaked within the top ten spots of charts in the UK, Canada, Italy, and the Netherlands. The song reached #1 in France and the European Hot 100 on the week ending August 29, 2009 according to Billboard magazine. On Dec. 11, 2009, Billboard announced their Year-End Canadian Update, placing "I Know You Want Me" at #7 on the Hot 100 chart and #2 on the CHR/Top 40 chart.[19] He later signed with Polo Grounds Music through Sony Music and created his own label Mr. 305 Inc.[20] Other singles included "Blanco" featuring Pharrell Williams of The Neptunes and "Hotel Room Service", the latter of which peaked at #9 on the Hot 100. On their second collaboration since "Go Girl", Pitbull appeared on the debut single of rapper David Rush (formerly Young Bo$$), "Shooting Star", also with Kevin Rudolf and LMFAO. An amateur video of Pitbull punching a disruptive audience member at a Colorado concert leaked on the Internet in late May 2009. Pitbull explained to MTV News that it was because the fan kept throwing cash around the stage, and after Pitbull pulled him up to the stage, he threw a stash of money right in Pitbull's face.[21] He has been tapped by the Miami Dolphins to work alongside T-Pain & Jimmy Buffett to release a new fight song for the Dolphins.[22] The city of Miami granted Pitbull a "Key to the City" honor on August 19.[23]

Pitbull was also a featured guest on "Armada Latina", the fourth single off the album Rise Up by Latin rap legends, Cypress Hill. The song was produced by Jim Jonsin and also features Marc Anthony.

With an accompanying tour titled "Mr. Worldwide's Carnaval", Pitbull will release a full-length Spanish-language album titled Armando on May 25, 2010.[24]

Due to Arizona's anti-immigration law, Pitbull canceled one of his shows of the tour there.

Daughtry (pronounced /ˈdɔːtri/[5]) is an American rock band from North Carolina, formed and fronted by former American Idol season 5 finalist Chris Daughtry in 2006. Their self-titled debut album was released in 2006. The disc reached number one for two non-consecutive weeks on the Billboard Top 200, outsold Idol winner Taylor Hicks' debut album, sold more than four million copies and was named the number one selling album of 2007 by Billboard. Their album is also the fastest-selling debut rock album in Soundscan history.[6] The first single from the album, "It's Not Over", was the eighth most played song across all formats on U.S. radio in 2007, and their second single from the album, "Home", was the tenth most played song in the U.S. of 2007.[7]

The band's second album, Leave This Town, was released on July 14, 2009. The first single, "No Surprise," was released on May 5. No Surprise was written by Chris Daughtry with Chad Kroeger and Eric Dill.[8]

History

2006–08: Self-titled debut album and breakthrough success

American Idol season 5 fourth-place finisher Chris Daughtry stated that he would form a new band after turning down Fuel's offer to make him their lead singer.[9] On July 10, 2006 it was announced that Chris Daughtry had signed with 19 Entertainment and RCA Records, which holds contracts with fellow American Idol finalists Kelly Clarkson and Kellie Pickler. Chris Daughtry is a singer-songwriter himself and has collaborated with several other songwriters, such as Live's Ed Kowalczyk, Fuel's Carl Bell, 3 Doors Down's Brad Arnold, Matchbox Twenty's Rob Thomas, SR-71's Mitch Allan,[10] Shinedown's Brent Smith, and Nickelback's Chad Kroeger.

Chris Daughtry and members of his label held auditions for the band Daughtry and chose 4 members for the band: Jeremy Brady, 21, guitarist (no longer in the band); Josh Steely, 36, lead guitarist; Josh Paul (Musician), 29, bassist who also played for Suicidal Tendencies; Joey Barnes, 30, drummer, who was the lead singer of Suicide Darlings. Two of the band members hail from North Carolina — Steely, whom Chris Daughtry had known for some time, and Brady, who was introduced to him a month before the audition. Steely and Paul are both from California.[11] The decision was made to name the band "Daughtry" in order to keep name recognition. In an interview, Chris Daughtry said, "We could have come out with a really obscure name, but coming from a TV show and having name recognition, it was easier just to go with my last name."

The band's self-titled debut album was produced by Howard Benson and was released by 19 Entertainment and RCA Records on November 21, 2006. Chris Daughtry himself played a part in the production of the album, particularly in songwriting where he wrote and co-wrote all but two songs on the album — "Feels Like Tonight" and "What About Now". Additionally, he solely wrote "Home," "Breakdown" and "Gone".[10] Other notable songwriters Dr. Luke and Max Martin also contribution to the album and session drummer Josh Freese also played drums on all the tracks for the album. The album charted for 81 weeks on the Billboard Chart before it dropped out of the 100 and returned later on the 95th week into the Top 40. In total, the album has officially stayed in the Billboard Top 200 for 2 Years (104 Weeks).

The album spawned several hits for the group, starting with its first single "It's Not Over", which debuted on the radio on December 6, 2006, after being delayed from a planned September release[10] and reaching #4 on the Billboard Hot 100 and hitting the top 3 in several other charts. Shortly thereafter, Jeremy Brady announced his departure from Daughtry and was replaced with Brian Craddock, 31, from Virginia. In interviews, Chris Daughtry and Craddock have discussed having known each other when Chris Daughtry was still a member of Absent Element.[12]

After the success of "It's Not Over," the second single from the album, "Home" was released and peaked at #5 on the Billboard Hot 100, after debuting at #83, weeks ahead of its official release to radio. The song was also the official "kick off" song on sixth season of American Idol, played after a contestant was voted off the show, also the case during season 5 of Australian Idol. The Brazilian version of Idol, called Ídolos Brazil, used this song as well in its second season. The album's third single, "What I Want", was released to rock radio on April 23, 2007, featuring musician Slash on lead guitars. The single has peaked at number 6 on the rock charts and is featured as a playable song on Guitar Hero: On Tour for the Nintendo DS. The band's fourth single "Over You" was released July 24, 2007. The band performed this single live on Good Morning America on June 1, 2007.[13] "Crashed", the album's fifth single, was released to rock stations on September 10, 2007, where it was also used in a commercial for LEGO Bionicle. The song was also performed on the Pre-Race show on ABC for the NASCAR NEXTEL Cup Chevy Rock and Roll 400. The album's sixth single, "Feels Like Tonight", was released on January 8, 2008, just over a year after the album's release. The video debuted in January and the song was used for the 2007 WWE Tribute to the Troops. Their song "There and Back Again" was also the official theme song for WWE Backlash in 2007.

Due to the success of the singles, Daughtry was certified 3x Platinum on June 21, 2007 and has since reached 4x Platinum, selling four million copies. The group is on page 8 on Myspace.com of the most played artists, with over 29 million plays. In addition, the group has appeared on the famous compilation album series Now That's What I Call Music! five times, with their songs "It's Not Over", "Home", "Over You", "Feels Like Tonight" and "What About Now". The band was also nominated for four Grammy Awards in 2008, for Best Pop Performance by a Duo or Group with Vocal, Best Rock Album, Best Rock Song and Best Rock Performance by a Duo or Group with Vocal. According to billboard.com, Daughtry has had twenty #1 hits around the world.

A Deluxe edition of Daughtry's self-titled album was released on September 9. Along with the original CD, this expanded CD/DVD package features four bonus tracks, including acoustic versions of "What About Now," "It's Not Over," and "Home," plus a cover of Foreigner's "Feels Like the First Time". The DVD contains all five of Daughtry's music videos, two rarely seen live clips, and exclusive on the road footage.

A shortened version of their massive hit single "Home" was used at the end of the English League Cup Final in February 2008 when the compilation of Tottenham Hotspur victory over Chelsea was shown at the end of the Sky coverage.

2009–present: Leave This Town

On March 9, 2009, Chris Daughtry announced on his webiste that he and the band had finished the album's recording. The sophomore record was released on July 14, 2009 with 14 songs making the cut from the 19 recorded songs.

Chris Daughtry has said that the new record is a very big rock album. He has also stated that the band had written and recorded over 30 new songs. He worked with Chad Kroeger from Nickelback, Ryan Tedder from OneRepublic[14], Trevor McNevan from Thousand Foot Krutch, Jason Wade from Lifehouse, Richard Marx, Scott Stevens from The Exies, Adam Gontier from Three Days Grace and Eric Dill, former vocalist for The Click Five.

The album's first single "No Surprise" was released on May 5, 2009 through their website.[15] It officially went for radio play on May 26. Daughtry appeared on American Idol on May 6, 2009 (which is the Result Show of Season 8's 'Rock Week') performing "No Surprise". The new album was released on July 14, 2009, and its title is Leave This Town.[16] "Life After You" was also just released.

Leave This Town debuted at #1 on the Billboard 200 selling 269,000 copies in its first week.[17] The record was also No. 1 on the Digital Albums Chart and the Rock Chart.[18]

With the release of Leave This Town, Chris Daughtry made American Idol history by becoming the first 'Idol' to have two consecutive #1 albums. He is followed by Carrie Underwood with the release of her third studio album, Play On, debuting also at No. 1 on Billboard 200.

The song "Home" from Daughtry's debut album was featured in a commercial for the new FOX show The Cleveland Show. The song features Family Guy's Cleveland as he sets off to make his own television show. Cleveland is also singing the song.

Daughtry performed on stage at the American Music Awards on November 22, 2009, and sang their hit single Life after you, along with other Idol stars, like Carrie Underwood, Kelly Clarkson, and Adam Lambert.[19]

On November 10, 2009, USA Today revealed that Daughtry band members Chris Daughtry and Brian Craddock co-wrote "Don't Wanna Be Wrong," an iTunes Deluxe bonus track on Allison Iraheta's debut album, Just Like You.[20]

On New Years Eve 2009, Daughtry played a mini-concert in times square in New York, they sang the songs Life After You, Everytime You Turn around, No Surprise and Home

Daughtry performed "Life After You", "No Surprise", and "Home" on the halftime show on Thanksgiving Day 2009 at Cowboys Stadium.

Daughtry is featured on Timbaland's album Shock Value II with the song "Long Way Down".

Daughtry right now has two albums in the top 200, Leave This Town (#66) and Daughtry (#112), making Daughtry the first band in 3 years to have two albums in the top 200.[citation needed]

Daughtry will be featured on the new NOW soundtrack named Now That's What I Call Love, with the song Home. Daughtry isn't the only ex-idol contestant on the CD, the CD also features David Cook and Jordin Sparks.

Their song "Learn My Lesson" has been used in the promotional of Fullmetal Alchemist : Brotherhood in Animax-Asia.

On April 16, 2010, the band announced on its website that drummer Joey Barnes and the band had parted ways.[21]

Tour

The band has been touring non-stop since January 2007. They have performed across the U.S. and Canada, along with shows in the UK, Germany, and Singapore. They opened for Nickelback for a brief stint, Puddle of Mudd, and Finger Eleven and have featured 12 Stones, Cinder Road, Small Town Sleeper, Day Of Fire and Eve To Adam as opening acts. On May 27, 2007, the band performed during the Indianapolis 500 Pre-Race show on ABC, and headlined the 2007 Summerfest at the Marcus amphitheater in Milwaukee, WI with a crowd of more than 15,000 on July 6.

Daughtry has played shows in Australia, as well as the United Kingdom and across Europe for the first time and opened for Bon Jovi for several shows in November. They were featured as the opening act during Bon Jovi's Lost Highway Tour. The band began a sold out tour with Bon Jovi on February 18, 2008 all the way through the end of April. Chris Daughtry joined Bon Jovi onstage every night to perform their song, "Blaze of Glory".

Daughtry joined forces with the ONE Campaign at 2008's Democratic National Convention and Republican National Convention to raise awareness about world poverty. The band refused to back a presidential candidate during their interviews.
