Bag Raiders

BAG RAIDERS
Blowfish Kitchen & Bar
Friday, 23rd September 2011
Starts at 8pm

BIOGRAPHY
BAG RAIDER’s long overdue and lovingly anticipated debut self-titled album is finally complete. Now the boys are ready to sit back, kick their feet up and enjoy the sound of jaws collectively dropping across the planet as they deliver one of the most well rounded and unique debut pop albums of the year.

Bag Raiders are the combined talents of Jack Glass and Chris Stracey. Together, they produce the sparks of light, aural gems and sonic booms that make up one of the most sought-after up and coming duos on the planet. After dropping singles on Bang Gang 12s (Fun Punch, Turbo Love) and remixing the likes Cut Copy, Midnight Juggernauts and Kid Sister, the two’s reputation internationally grew, and when they released a little ditty titled ‘Shooting Stars’ they reached every dangerous, dark and smokey corner of the world, making them a household name among in-the-know indie kids, the sweaty dance faithful and the DJs across the globe.

A collection of thoughts, ideas and memories, Bag Raiders transcends typical dance and pop boundaries, showcasing the creativity of a band at the forefront of modern production. The album ticks the right boxes for fans new and old, coming correct with sing-a-long choruses, deep-breath anthems, blissful chill and pure dancefloor energy. In short Bag Raiders debut album adds a new dimension in the cluttered and diluted dance world.

The boys recorded the album deep inside their secret inner-city bunker, where they grew colonial beards and shut out all natural light, choosing only to surface for fine wine and an assortment of snorkeling trips. Amidst the candle light and dripping taps they agonised over structures, waveforms and patterns possessed by a mad desire to reproduce a synaesthesic wonderland they could picture but could not see.

T-ara (Korean: 티아라; Korean pronunciation: [tʰiara]) is a South Korean girl group formed by Core Contents Media in 2009. Before their debut, there was a high level of interest in the group as they were called "Super Rookies" and had been training for three years prior to debut.[1] Originally a five-member group, they released their first song "Good Person" for the soundtrack of the Korean drama Cinderella Man in April 2009. In June 2009 members Jiwon and Jiae left the group, delaying the group's debut. The next month, T-ara regrouped to become a six-member group with the addition of Boram, Qri, and Soyeon, and released their debut single "거짓말" ("Lies").[2] In July 2010, T-ara introduced a new member, Ryu Hwayoung, to become a seven-member group.[3] T-ara uses a rotating leader system, and has a different member of the group elected as leader each year, in order to give both the group and the individual members the opportunity to grow in a new direction.[4]

History

Pre-debut

The original five T-ara members were trained for three years, and released their first song "좋은 사람" (Good Person) for the Korean drama Cinderella Man soundtrack. In early 2009, Jiyeon was in a collaboration with SeeYa and Davichi for project single called "여성시대" (Women's Generation).[citation needed]

In June 2009, Core Contents Media announced that Jiae and Jiwon left due to differences in music style. Soyeon, Boram and Qri were added. Later, it was revealed that Soyeon was originally cast to be a part of Girls' Generation (SNSD), but six months prior to her debut Soyeon withdrew from the group due to personal circumstances. Her stint away from the music industry was relatively short as she quickly joined T-ara following open auditions to replace the departing members.[5] The group's agency released promotional pictures in July 2009 in accordance with the new members. Afterward, T-ara released their debut single "거짓말" (Lies).

Debut and Absolute First Album (2009)

T-ara made its debut on MBC's Radio Star talk show on July 29, 2009.[6] The music video was released that day. Their first performance was on Mnet's M! Countdown show, where they performed "Lies" and "Wanna Play?". Their debut was looked upon negatively by webpostings, where people stated that it was lipsynched and commented that it seemed like an elementary school performance.[7] The group announced afterward that future performances would be live.[8] A few members of T-ara (Eunjung, Soyeon, Hyomin and Jiyeon) were in a project group with Supernova, a six member male group for the digital single, TTL (Time to Love). The single TTL became the members first number 1 as it topped many of the online charts. On December 1, 2009, T-ara released their first full-length album, named Absolute First Album. The album had two lead singles, "Bo Peep Bo Peep" and "Like The First Time", both with music videos.

Breaking Heart and Temptastic (2010)

On January 1, 2010, T-ara's single "Bo Peep Bo Peep" won an award on the New Year's Day episode of Music Bank. Two days later, they won the Mutizen award on Inkigayo. The following week, T-ara won their second consecutive Music Bank and Mutizen awards. The following week, T-ara won their third consecutive mutizen award (Triple Crown).

Later in the month, Core Contents Media announced that Eunjung and Hyomin would take part, alongside label mates SeeYa and Davichi, in project group, 'Wonder Woman'. Consequently, the T-ara announced promotions for their follow up single, "Like The First Time" (Korean: "처음처럼"). Promotions ended quickly as member Soyeon was diagnosed with H1N1.[9]

In February, the group announced the release of a repackaged version of their debut album, titled Breaking Heart. The music video for its lead single, "I Go Crazy Because of You" (Korean: "너 때문에 미쳐"), was released on February 24, 2010. The group performed their debut stage on Mnet's M!Countdown. After promotions for "I Go Crazy Because of You", T-ara promoted the next single off the repackaged album titled "I'm Really Hurt" (Korean: "내가 너무 아파").

On November 23, 2010, a music video for their song "Why Are You Being Like This" (Korean: "왜 이러니") was revealed.[10]

On December 1, 2010, T-ara released their Temptastic album in digital format. The music video for their title track, "Yayaya", was revealed on the same day. The album's physical release was delayed until December 3 due to the bombardment of Yeonpyeong in November.[11] The group held their first comeback stage through KBS's Music Bank on December 3 and began promotions with their new 7th member, Hwayoung, and a new leader, Boram. T-ara received two consecutive wins for "Why Are You Being Like This" and "Yayaya" on Mnet M! Countdown on December 9, 2010 and December 16, 2010 respectively.

Japanese debut, John Travolta Wannabe and Black Eyes (2011-Present)

In June 2011, it was announced that T-ara would be making a comeback with the title track "Roly Poly" on July 1, 2011.[12] It was also announced that the group would be advancing into the Japanese market with a showcase on July 5.[13] As of June 14, 2011, Core Contents Media has announced that Hyomin shall be taking over the leadership for this album and for their Japanese promotions.[14] They further explained saying, “In order to instill a sense of responsibility in each of the members, we have decided to change the leader for each new album release. We will be passing the leader role onto members who have not been leader yet. The reason Eunjung was leader during their debut was because she and Hyomin had trained the longest with T-ara, and we felt that she would be the best fit". They continued, “Likewise, Hyomin has been chosen for T-ara’s Japanese and ‘Roly-Poly’ promotions for the same reasons as Eunjung. We have made this decision after much discussions with both the members and our agency.”

T-ara's "Roly-Poly" music video and song was released on June 29 and reached #1 on Cyworld, GomTV, Bugs, Nate and Mnet real-time charts just after an hour.

On August 2011, T-ara released Roly-Poly in Copacabana. The song was named after "Copacabana" popularized in the 80's in Jongno disco clubs. The new version shows T-ara's new Eurodance moves and with the upgrade of the rhythm makes this version perfect for summer vacation songs.

T-ara released their debut Japanese single "Bo Peep Bo Peep" on September 28, which debuted at #1 on Oricon's daily single chart with 20,068 sold on its first day of release.[15] The single is coupled with a Japanese remake of their song "I Go Crazy Because of You".[16] The single also tops the Oricon's weekly single chart with 49,712 copies sold in the first week,[17] a debut record for a Korean female pop group.

On September 8, it was announced that T-ara will be releasing a new EP titled "Black Eyes" on October 27. The album will contain a similar electronic sound to that of Absolute First Album and Breaking Heart. A 30-minute music video will be released on November 1 which will have a drama-like storyline and a 1 billion won production budget.[18]

T-ara's second Japanese single will be a remake of "Yayaya" from their Temptastic mini-album, which will be released on November 30.[19]

f(x) (Korean: 에프엑스; pronounced /ˌɛf ˈɛks/) is a five member South Korean girl group formed by SM Entertainment in 2009. The name is a play on the mathematical notation for function, and when input with different 'x', there can be many different outcomes. f(x) strives to be the kind of girl group that can change and adapt to many situations. The group members have also been nicknamed "function girls". The group made their debut on September 1, 2009 with release of a digital single "La Cha Ta" (stylized as "LA chA TA"). The quintet consists of Victoria, Amber, Luna, Sulli and Krystal.

History

Pre-debut history

Krystal Jung was first spotted by SM Entertainment in 2000 on a family visit to Korea, which earned her a small role in a short segment of Shinhwa's "Wedding March" music video. Sulli Choi first debuted as a child actress in 2005 when she was selected to play young Princess Sun-hwa in the SBS television drama, The Ballad of Seo-dong.[2] In 2006, SM Entertainment recruited Luna after seeing her performing on SBS's television program, "Truth Game".[3] Victoria was spotted by a S.M. Entertainment's agent at a Beijing dance competition, and later joined the company. Two months later, Amber was cast through SM's Global Auditions in Los Angeles, California, where she was one of two people (one male) selected to be trainees.

2009: Debut, first single album and collaborations

f(x)'s performances of "Chocolate" at an LG event.

SM first released a teaser preview of the group via YouTube on August 24, introducing them as "Asia's Pop Dance Group." For five days, SM individually released information through news portals and posted pictures of each member on SM Town's official website, starting with Korean member Sulli on August 26, Taiwanese-American member Amber on August 27, Korean-American member Krystal on August 28, Korean member Luna on August 29, and lastly the Chinese member Victoria on August 30.

On September 1, the group's first single "La Cha Ta" (stylized as "LA chA TA") was digitally released. Following their first performance at the Samseong-dong Fashion Center on September 2, the music video was screened and released online the next day. The group's first broadcast performance of "La Cha Ta" was held at MBC's music show Show! Music Core on September 5.

On October 7, the group also released the electro-pop version of the digital single, "Chocolate Love", alongside their label mate Girls' Generation.[4] The single was released for the promotion of the 4th edition Blacklabel series of LG CYON phone, LG Chocolate (BL40).

On November 9, f(x) released their first single album, Chu~♡, consisting of 3 songs.

On December 19 and 20, f(x) appeared as special guests on Into the New World concert of their label-mate girl group, Girls' Generation, in Olympic Fencing Gymnasium.

2010: First mini-album, Amber's hiatus, and SMTown World Tour

On January 2, the group released the Chinese track, "Lollipop", a slick derivitive of the famous 1958 classic "Lollipop" - written by Julius Dixson and Beverly Ross, for which they collaborated with the Chinese boy band, M.I.C, to promote the LG Cyon phone. The music video was digitally released on January 12, 2010.

On February 27 and 28, the group appeared once again as special guests on Into the New World concert in Olympic Fencing Gymnasium.

On May 4, f(x) released their first mini-album, Nu ABO, consisting of 6 tracks. The lead single, "Nu ABO", topped online music portal charts Monkey3, Dosirak and Bugs.[5] The song also made it to the Gaon Chart weekly number-one singles. The music video for the song was released on May 6. The group made their live comebacks on KBS's Music Bank on May 7, MBC's Music Core on May 8 and SBS's Inkigayo on May 9.[6]

On July 17, the group started performing their next promotional single, "Mr. Boogie", from their mini-album, Nu ABO. They had their first performance for the song on MBC's Music Core.

f(x) also participated in the SMTown Live '10 World Tour alongside their label-mates on August 21 at Seoul Jamsil Olympic Stadium. They also performed in Tokyo, Shanghai, Los Angeles and Paris (2011) on later dates.[7] This marks the first time f(x) and their fellow label-mate groups performed outside of Asia.

On November 24, 2010, Avex Entertainment, as well as SM Entertainment Japan, released a statement about the renewal of contracts of SM artists signed to Avex. It stated that f(x) is now signed to Avex, and its albums will be released under the said label in Japan, Taiwan, China and Hong Kong.[1]

2011–present: First album Pinocchio and Hot Summer

It was announced by SM Entertainment that Amber returned from USA after a long leave since June 2010 and that f(x) are planning to release a studio album in the first half of the year.[8] As of 2011, f(x) is considered one of the "five in the middle" in the South Korean girl-band scene, alongside T-ara, After School, SISTAR, and Brown Eyed Girls — after the "strong four" consisting of Girls' Generation, Wonder Girls, 2NE1, and Kara.[9]

The first teaser photo for their full-length album entitled Pinocchio was released on April 7, 2011 at the f(x) official website. The MV teaser for the lead single, "Pinocchio (Danger)" (a remake of Kristine Elezaj's "Razor"),[10] was released on April 15, 2011. The album was released on April 20, 2011 and the group held their first comeback stage through KBS’s Music Bank on April 22, 2011.

The group have achieved 8-wins with "Pinocchio (Danger)" from the music shows, namely M! Countdown, Music Bank and Inkigayo.

On June 8, it was announced that f(x) would be releasing their repackaged album of Pinocchio, titled "Hot Summer", on the 14th. It included all 10 songs from their first album and new track "Hot Summer" (a remake of Monrose's "Hot Summer",[10] written by Thomas Troelsen and Remee), their OST song for "Paradise Ranch" and digital singles "Chu" and "La Cha Ta."[11]

In August 2011, f(x) released a song called "Garagabana" as an original soundtrack for the online game "Puzzle Bubble."[12]

It was revealed at S.M. Town in Tokyo that f(x) would be debuting in Japan in January 2012.

She was also casted as regular member of Invincible Youth, and appeared in the show until it ended in December 2010. Luna appeared in Star King and became regular member of the show. She went on to win "New Star" (신인상) award in 2010 SBS Entertainment Award (2010 연예대상). Sulli was casted as the co-host of Inkigayo (인기가요) along with Jo Kwon from 2AM and Jung Yong Hwa of C.N.Blue. She is still hosting the show with Jo Kwon, along with new co-hosts IU and Lee Gi Kwang

In June 2010, Amber rapped in Korean and English for Taiwanese Mandopop artist Danson Tang on track, "I'm Back" from his third album The First Second.

In late 2010, members Victoria, Sulli and Krystal became model endorsers for the clothing brand, Calvin Klein's X Jeans. A music video for the song, "Beautiful Day", was released in December 2010 to endorse the brand. The group also endorsed another clothing brand, K-Swiss, for their 2010 winter collection.[14]

In addition to those endorsements, Victoria also was featured in Kangta's music video of his song 爱,频率 (Love,Frequency).

From May 2011 through August 2011, Krystal appeared as a contestant on Kim Yuna's celebrity ice skating show, "Kim Yuna's Kiss and Cry." After consistently scoring near the top of the competition, Krystal and her partner Lee Don Hun won the show with their flawless performance of "Carmen."[15] Krystal and Lee Don Hun were later invited to participate in "Kim Yuna's Ice Show--All That Skate Summer 2011" on August 14th and 15th.[16]

Beginning on September 19, 2011, MBC will air "High Kick 3," a new daily sitcom show starring Krystal.[17]
